The play
This play was originally written for the Bunraku puppet theater in 1781 and later adapted for kabuki in Osaka in 1794, then performed in Edo (Tokyo) in 1818. The play is based on the struggle between the forces of Shogun Tokugawa and the clan Toyotomi in Osaka in 1614-1615. To escape censorship, the action was transposed in the 12th century between the Hôjô and Minamoto clans.
The play was in 10 acts, but only the third act survived entitled “Kinugawa-mura Kankyo” (At the Cottage in the Village of Kinugawa).
